PURPOSE:To enable accurate detection of a preceding vehicle, an obstacle and the like ahead of a vehicle, by arranging laser lights to be horizontal at upper and lower ends thereof and to overlap along the entire side ends thereof between adjacent ones. CONSTITUTION:A radar 31 is roughly consists of a light output section 43, a light receiving section 45 and a control section 47. The light output section 43 comprises an light output unit 51 having the optical axis toward the front of a body and light output units 49 and 53 having optical axes deviated by an angle of thetaR and thetaL (thetaR=thetaL) to the right and the left respectively from the optical axis. The laser lights outputted from laser diodes 55, 57 and 59 are radiated at an expanse angle of thetaTR, thetaTC and thetaTL (thetaTR=thetaTC and thetaTL) and at the intensity of LTR, LTC and LTL (LTR=LTC=LTL) through lenses 61, 63 and 65. Then, mask plates 81, 83 and 85 having a square window are provided in front of the respective mask plates overlap along the entire side ends thereof between adjacent ones. Besides, the laser beams are horizontal at upper and lower ends thereof with no ruggedness, and thus the detection of a preceding vehicle can be done accurately.
