PURPOSE:To enable the rapid detection of a two-dimensional position, by irradiating objective matter with light and catching the reflected light therefrom by the line sensor of a camera while applying signal processing to the video output from said sensor. CONSTITUTION:The same area 3a of objective matter 1 is irradiated with the spot light from a spot light irradiation apparatus 3 and the condensed light from a condensed light irradiation apparatus 4 and the reflected lights thereof are received by one line sensor mounted in a camera 2 to be subjected to photoelectric conversion. The video output of said line sensor 2 is processed by a signal processing means 5 consisting of a video output processing circuit 6, an operational processing part 8 using CPU7 and a position detection part 9. At this time, two kinds of threshold levels H, L having different levels are set by the circuit 6 and the change points A, B of the video signal from the line sensor are detected on the basis of said levels H, L. Subsequently, range finding operational processing is performed on the basis of the positional informations of said change points A, B by CPU7 and the processing part 8 to obtain the positional informations of a distance (y-direction) and a width direction (x-direction).
