PURPOSE:To constitute a simple fast optical switch by driving an optional electro-optic elements among electro-optic elements arranged among plural polarization beam splitters which are arrayed linearly in series and switching splitters where light enters and exits. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1-6 are connectec to the polarization beam splitters 13-17 arrayed linearly in the series through rod lenses 7-12 for convergence. The electro-optica elements 18-21 are arranged among the polarization beam splitters 13-17. The splitters 13-17 have beam splitter (BS) surface 131-171, and the BS surface 131 is provided at right angles to the BS surfaces 141-171. Undeflected light incident from the filter 1 through the rod lens 7 is made into linear polarized light beams of an (s) wave and a (p) wave through the BS surface 131; the (p) wave travels in an X direction and the (s) wave travels in a Y direction. The (p) wave becomes an (s) wave when passing through an energized electro-optic element and is reflected by a BS surface to travel in the -Y direction. Consequently, the fast optical switch of simple constitution is obtained.
