PURPOSE:To readily obtain alpha-hydroxy-gamma,gamma-dimethyl-gamma-butyrolactone useful as an intermediate for medicines in simpler equipment than in the well-known method, by reacting glyoxylic acid with tert-butanol. CONSTITUTION:Glyoxylic acid expressed by formula I is reacted with tert- butanol expressed by formula iI at 1:0.5-2.0, preferably 1:0.8-1.5 molar ratio of the former to the latter, preferably in the presence of an azeotropic solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene, pentane, hexane, cyclohexane or carbon tetrachloride, at 30-150 deg.C temperature and, as necessary, under about 50-760 Torr reduced pressure through azeotropic dehydration to give advantageously the aimed compound expressed by formula III. According to this method, both liquid raw materials can be used without using gaseous raw materials at ordinary temperature and therefore, handling and operation are readily carried out. Furthermore, this method is industrially advantageous from the viewpoint of reaction equipment.
