PURPOSE:To decide a color masking parameter making a color difference minimum by a person's eye and capable of approximating most suitably a rendering color with respect to a color distribution of a converted picture, by using a virtual color patch to perform a simulation. CONSTITUTION:A color patch selecting means 1 samples a virtual color patch set in a coordinate value space and stores the coordinate value selecting only the color capable of being represented by (R, G, B) and (c, m, y) in a color patch memory means 2. A color conversion means 3 converts the (R, G, B) of respective picture elements into the coordinate values and a color distribution calculating means 4 calculates an average mu and a covariance matrix S on all the picture elements. A weight calculating means 5 calculates the weight on a virtual color patch and stores in a weight memory means. A luminance value calculating means 7 converts the coordinate of the virtual color patch into a three primary color luminance value and a masking calculating means 9 obtains a density of the three primary colors therefrom. An evaluated value calculating means 10 calculates the evaluated value thereby and further a control means 11 makes minimum the obtained evaluated value by a convergence calculation.
