Device for automatically distributing oil and keeping its level constant in the sump of engines, mainly of motor vehicles. The invention relates to a device consisting of a small reservoir 1 communicating with the bottom of the sump 16 of the engine and enclosing a float 3 whose spindle 2 actuates a lever 6 articulated to a support 7 and pressing, as the level rises, a needle valve 4 which closes the oil inlet 2. A spring 5 facilitates opening of the needle valve as soon as the level drops. An electrical circuit actuates a valve 10, by intervention of two contacts, closing the oil inlet as soon as the engine is started, and opening it when the engine is stopped and cooled down. Thus the distributor 1 only acts when moving oil is lowered back into the sump and away from the disturbances of the oil pump. A manual valve closes the oil inlet to the outlet of the reservoir 13 during oil change operations. <IMAGE>
