PURPOSE:To produce an outer ring of a synchronous universal coupling at low cost, by forming a cup-like cylindrical blank from a carbon steel by warm forging, and then shearing the blank is such a manner that a reduction rate of thickness at a portion of a ball rolling groove is greater than that at the other portion. CONSTITUTION:In producing an outer ring of a synchronous universal coupling, a cylindrical blank 30 is first formed from a carbon steel for machine structure by warm forging at 500-900 deg.C. Then, the cylindrical blank 30 is sheared in such a manner that a reduction rate of a total cross section is 25-45%, and a reduction rate of thickness at a portion near a ball groove 33 is equal to or greater than that at the other portion. Thus, the outer ring is produced. According to the method, the outer ring of the synchronous universal coupling may be produced without a reduction is strength even by using an unexpensive carbon steel for machine structure.
