PURPOSE:To provide a retort for a heat treatment such as hardening of small- sized iron and steel products such as steel balls and machine screws and which uniformly stirs materials to be treated without sticking the same to the inside of a body vessel at all by specifying the sectional shape and inside surface layer of said vessel. CONSTITUTION:The retort 10 consists of the body vessel 11 which is supported pivotally at the front and rear by revolving shafts 12, 12 and the vessel 11 is formed to the polygonal (octagon in this embodiment) shape of the section perpendicular to the shafts 12. A thermally sprayed ceramic layer 13 is further formed on the inside surface of the vessel 11. The materials T to be treated in the lower layer are hooked by the corners of the octagonal shape and are lifted in the rotating direction when the materials T to be treated are packed into the vessel 11 and the vessel is rotated in an arrow direction. The lifted materials are dropped in the lifted position. As a result, the materials T to be treated are subjected to the heat treatment while the materials are vertically replaced and are kept agitated. The materials T to be treated contact with the layer 13 on the inside surface of the vessel 11 and hardly stick thereto.
