NEW MATERIAL:The cyclohexane derivative of formula I (R is H or 1-10C alkyl; A is H, halogen or cyano; l is 1 or 2; m is 0 or 1). EXAMPLE:2-[trans-4-(trans-4-Propylcyclohexyl)cyclohexyl]-1-(3, 4-difluo rophenyl) ethane. USE:Useful as a component of liquid crystal composition. It has low viscosity, high dielectric anisotropy and excellent compatibility to other liquid crystal composition. Mixing of the compound with another liquid crystal composition gives a liquid crystal composition having low viscosity and low working threshold voltage without raising the viscosity and the driving voltage of the liquid crystal composition. It is also effective to widen the liquid crystal-phase temperature range of the mixture. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I wherein m is 0 and A is H, etc., can be produced e.g. by reacting CdCl2 with a compound derived from the compound of formula II and metallic magnesium, reacting the resultant compound of formula III with the compound of formula IV, reducing and dehydrating the product and carrying out the catalytic reduction of the resultant compound of formula V.
