The invention relates to a safety device for a lift 1. The inertia wheel 11 of the lifting motor 9 comprises an annular gear 12 which is capable of receiving the meshing of a starter pinion 13, when an auxiliary electric motor 16, powered by a battery, is started. Thus, in the event of a power cut or the like, the motor 16 automatically brings the lift 1 up to the level of the floor immediately above. Application: automatic operation when the lift 1 is stuck between two floors, in order to bring the lift-users to the level of a floor where they can get out by themselves, without waiting for a rescue team. <IMAGE>
