The unwinder according to the invention applies in particular to the high-speed unwinding of 6 to 12 mm diameter aluminium wires used for the treatment of liquid steel. It includes a shaft 2 mounted so as to rotate on a tilting carrier plate 1. A hub 5 which expands under the effect of gravity is fixed to the shaft. In the loading position, a coil 19 is engaged on the shaft whose axis X2 is vertical. The weight of the coil causes the hub to expand and the coil to be secured to the shaft. The plate 1 is then tilted so as to bring the shaft 2 into the horizontal, along the axis X3, and the unwinding of the coil is carried out. Having completed this, the unwinder returns to the loading position for installing a new coil. <IMAGE>
