PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy of a stop position by storing each stop position error every time and making an amended decision on a subsequent operational position of a locking unit while taking a stop position error into account. CONSTITUTION:The position of the rod 2 of an air cylinder 4 is detected by a position detecting sensor 21 and the position detecting signal therefrom is input to a controller 22. When a great difference is present between the current position and a set position, the rod 2 is driven at high speed by a high-speed control valve 8, when the difference is small, the rod 2 is driven at low speeds by a low-speed control valve 9, and when the rod 2 goes to the set position, the rod 2 is locked. The stop position errors are stored every time to make an amended decision on the position of a subsequent lock unit operation while taking the stop position error into account. After the repetition of such operation by three or four times, the rod 2 can be stopped at set position, with very high accuracy.
