PURPOSE:To infusibilize pitch fiber in high efficiency preventing the heat welding of the fibers, and to enable the production of high-quality carbon fiber, by dissolving at least a part of soluble component from pitch fiber produced by melt-spinning. CONSTITUTION:A spinning raw material such as petroleum pitch, coal pitch, etc., is melt-spun through a spinning nozzle, etc. The produced pitch fiber is treated with e.g. benzene to dissolve at least a part of soluble component. The treated fiber is subjected to carbonization and graphitization to obtain a carbon fiber having high quality.
