PURPOSE:To produce the titled fiber having large specific surface area, pore volume and average pore diameter and excellent mechanical strength, by oxidizing an acrylic fiber in an oxidizing atmosphere at a specific temperature and carrying out two-stage activation treatment with activation gases each having a specific composition. CONSTITUTION:An acrylic fiber is oxidized in an oxidizing atmosphere (preferably air or a mixture of air and N2) at 200-400 deg.C and subjected to the first- stage activation treatment with an activation gas having H2O/CO2 molar ratio of >=1.5 preferably at 850-1,000 deg.C for 5-100min. The treated fiber is subjected to the second-stage activation treatment with an activation gas having H2O/CO2 molar ratio of <=1.4 preferably at 900-1,100 deg.C for 1-120min. An acrylic activated carbon fiber having a specific surface area of >=1,200m<2>/g, a pore volume of >=0.6cc/g and an average pore diameter of >=25Angstrom can be produced by this process. It is preferable to activate >=700m<2>/g of the specific surface area in the first activation stage. |
