PURPOSE:To improve a compression efficiency as a whole image by carrying out a compression encoding of an image input signal by plural compressing sections and selecting the compression data of the best compression efficiency for one line unit. CONSTITUTION:An image input signal SD from an image input section 1 is inputted to compressing sections A2 and B4 only while an image effective signal HE is '1' to be compression encoded and the compression data CDA and CDB are outputted. A counter A3 and a counter B5 count the number of the data of the compression data CDA and CDB and output the compression data lengths CA and CB. A control section 7 transfers one output D1 of the compression data to a line buffer 8 and the other output D2 to an area designated by an address DA of a compression data memory 9. When a compression encoding of one line is completed, the compression data of the line buffer 8 is transferred to the memory 9 and written in the area designated by an address DP of a compression data pointer 10.
