In order, in the case of a pneumatic or hydropneumatic suspension of a motor vehicle, to ensure a suspension which is as comfortable as possible in normal driving conditions and to ensure the greatest possible directional control in certain operating states (for example, cornering, high speed of travel), a first compensating cylinder with a first separating piston, supported so that it is axially displaceable therein and dividing the cylinder chamber into two sub-chambers, is assigned to the spring elements of the one vehicle side and a corresponding second compensating cylinder to the spring elements of the other vehicle side, the separating pistons of the two compensating cylinders being rigidly connected to one another by a piston rod. One of the spring elements is connected to each of the sub-chambers - preferably with the insertion of a check valve, the spring elements of the one vehicle axle being connected to the sub-chambers on the piston rod side and the spring elements of the other vehicle axle to the other sub-chambers. <IMAGE>
