Masses contaminated with pollutants are thermally treated by this process. To remove thermally degradable pollutants, the mass is heated and the resulting exhaust air is subjected to a thermal afterburning. The mass in this case, prior to heating, is dried at relatively low temperatures with a supply of heated incoming air. The air used for drying is heated by the exhaust air downstream of the thermal after-burning in a heat exchange process and the exhaust air, prior to being blown out, is subjected to a very fine filtration. The plant for carrying out this process has a furnace, a fuel tank, a thermal afterburning device, a heat exchanger, a purification device and a dryer. These plant components are each accommodated in containers which, in the area of their walls, have connections for connecting the containers together by piping. By this means, the plant can be assembled on site according to the circumstances and the type of masses to be treated.
