PURPOSE:To obtain UO2 powder having high activity and excellent fluidity with a small amount of F, by blowing UF6 gas and steam into a fluidized bed reactor to give UO2F2 particles, converting the resultant UF2O2 particles into ammonium biuranate, drying the resultant ammonium biuranate, dehydrating the dried ammonium biuranate and converting the dehydrated ammonium biuranate into UO2 powder with H2 gas or H2 gas and steam. CONSTITUTION:UF6 gas and steam are blown into a fluidized bed reactor to convert the UF6 into UO2F2 particles, which are then reacted with an aqueous solution of NH4OH to form ammonium biuranate. The resultant product is then dried, dehydrated and converted into UO2 powder with H2 gas or H2 gas and steam. According to this method, the aimed UO2 powder, which could not be readily obtained by the conventional process, has high activity, a small amount of residual F and excellent fluidity at the same time and is suitable as a fuel for nuclear reactors, can be obtained. The excellent fluidity permits ready handling of the powder in the subsequent process and the granulating operation normally carried out in producing pellets used as the fuel for the nuclear reactors can be omitted.
