PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer useful as an impact-resistant modifier, etc., in high yield, by (co)polymerizing 1,3-butadiene alone or with acrylonitrile in the presence of 4,4'-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) of high purity obtained by a specific method as a polymerization initiator. CONSTITUTION:A cyanogen compound, e.g. NaCN or HCN, is reacted with a hydrazine and levulinic acid or an Na salt thereof in water to form a concd. aqueous solution of a hydrazo compound. Water, acetone or acetone or water is added to the above-mentioned aqueous solution to give an aqueous solution of the hydrazo compound or a solution thereof in acetone and water. An oxidizing agent, e.g. Cl2 gas, is then added to the resultant solution to oxidize the hydrazo compound and form 4,4'-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid). Acetone or water is added to the resultant reaction mixture as necessary to separate and obtain the 4,4'-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) of high purity, which is then used as a polymerization initiator to (co)polymerize 1,3-butadiene alone or with acrylonitrile in an inert solvent.
