In a method for compensating different settlements of bearings of buildings of great rigidity, an automatic level compensation is achieved, avoiding heavy building constructions, with low cost outlay and safe static calculation possibilities, as well as a limiting of the maximum bearing force on the individual bearings, by the use of bearings which, when they reach a given bearing force, are deformed plastically, changing their length, for as long as it takes the bearing force on the bearing in question to fall below the given value again. A bearing suitable for this has, arranged between a bearing upper part (2) and a bearing lower part (3), a pressure piece (4) or tension piece which, when a given bearing force is reached, is deformed, in particular by plastic flowing, changing its length, for as long as it takes the bearing force to fall below the given value again. <IMAGE>
