An internal combustion engine is described, which owing to the absence of impact loading and relatively low temperature rises in the cylinders, functions by a combustion process which makes the use of ceramics highly feasible. The internal combustion engine comprises a combination of compressor, steam engine and internal combustion engine and consequently, has a series of desirable characteristics. These include very low pollutant emission and the use of conventional liquid and gaseous fuels, and of hydrogen, the possible energy source of the future. The internal combustion engine can store energy in the pressure vessel, thereby permitting the recovery of braking energy, a high acceleration capability and ease of starting and consequently also overrun and idling cut-off. Even if heat losses occur from the pressure vessels and flow losses due to the transfer of gas from the cylinders to the pressure vessels and vice versa, which moreover can be drastically reduced by suitable heat insulation and above all, by the facility for cooling without energy losses by means of steam heating, a more effective exhaust energy recovery compared to the ATL, due to steam generation and steam addition to the working gas, a considerable increase of the compression ratio (@ = 42), the recovery of braking energy, a reduction in the size of the transmission and in particular, the use of ceramics for a ...
