PURPOSE:A novel crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite with a specific molar ratio and a control index is used as a catalyst to react benzene with a nitrating reagent, thus producing the titled compound used as a raw material for aniline with no formation of by-products in high catalyst activity. CONSTITUTION:In the vapor-phase nitration of benzene with a nitrating agent such as NO2, N2O3 or N2O4, a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite in which the molar ratio of silica/alumina is at least 12 and the control number is 1-12 is used as a catalyst. The catalyst is a novel ZSM zeolite and, for example, ZSM-5 (control index is 8.3), ZSM-48 (control index is 3.4) are cited, which are made by Mobile Oil Company. The catalysts have higher activity compared with conventional ones and form substantially no by-products such as dinitrobenzenes, resulting in good reaction selectivity. |
