In order to permit the undamped transmission of vibrations of the strings to the overall structure of the instrument and to permit ease of playing, the tautness of the strings is controlled by an articulation system which can be moved by means of a lever from a stable initial position, which it adopts at basic tuning. The vibrato system permits turning to both upper and lower frequencies. The design ensures that the tautness of the other strings is not affected when the tautness of one or more strings is modified, e.g. by breaking of a string or when the instrument is being tuned.
