Process for the production of a granular detergent composition of high apparent density, with the following stages: (a) kneading of detergent ingredients to form a kneaded solid detergent mixture; (b) comminution of the solid detergent mixture and (c) coating the comminuted, granular detergent composition with finely divided powder particles which are insoluble in water and have an average primary particle diameter of 10 mu m or less.
