A pump unit (1) has a multi-stage pump divided into two separate pump sections (9a, 9b) and an electric motor (2) arranged between said pump sections. The rotor (14) of the motor is linked to the pump impellers (5a to 8a and 5b to 8b, respectively) via a drive shaft (3). In this arrangement, the drive shaft (3) is designed, at least in the region of the motor rotor (14), as a tubular shaft having inlet and outlet orifices (27, 28) disposed laterally next to the rotor for the main delivery stream between the pump sections (9a, 9b). <IMAGE>
