A spool for a retractor for a vehicle safety belt (60) comprises a cylindrical core (22) containing a slot (54) extending parallel to its axis and having a locking bar (58) for retaining an end of the belt in said slot. The core (22) is enclosed by a plastics cover (40) having a slot (58) coincident with the slot (54) in the core, a cylindrical inner surface and a spiral outer surface having a minimum radius on one side of the slot and a maximum radius on the other side of the slot. The slot (22) in the core extends diametrically thereacross, and its other end is closed by a flap (74) hinged to the cover (22). |
