PURPOSE:To obtain the alkyl-, alkenyl- or aryl-substituted pyridine derivative useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, etc., quantitatively in a short time, by reacting a 2- (or 6-) or 4-substituted sulfonylpyridine derivative with a Grignard reagent. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III or formula IV can be produced in high selectivity and yield under mild condition in a short time with little side-reaction, by reacting (A) the compound of formula I or formula II [R<1> and R<2> are alkyl or cycloalkyl, allyl, aryl, aralkyl or hetercyclic group which may have substituent group; Y<1>-Y<4> and Z<1>-Z<4> are H, alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, thioalkoxy, thioaryloxy, NH2, OH, SO3H or halogen; Y<1>, Y<3>, Z<2> and Z<3> may be SO2 or SO] with (B) the Grignard reagent of formula R<3>MgX (R<3> is alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, alkyl-substituted aryl, or alkoxy-substituted aryl; X is halogen).
