The invention relates to a single-phase or multi-phase brushless welding generator having a downstream-connected rectifier unit. The invention is intended to create a welding generator which is simple, robust, independent of a mains power supply and thus small, is portable and at the same time emits power for additional appliances. For this purpose, the stator 8 of the welding generator, which is constructed as an asynchronous generator, contains (in addition to the stator winding 1 for the welding circuit) a second stator winding 2 which, together with the capacitors 6, forms the exciter circuit (energising circuit), either a stepping switch 7 being connected between the capacitors 6 and the tappings 11 on the stator winding 2, or a control element 10 being arranged in the exciter circuit.
