PURPOSE:To switch a platen mode without causing any trouble in feeding a medium, by a method wherein the platen mode is switched under the condition where a movable platen is attracted to the side of a main body of the platen prior to feeding a medium, then the medium is fed, and thereafter the movable platen is moved upward. CONSTITUTION:The platen mechanism for the printer comprises the main body 3 of the platen, a platen 4 for an ordinary medium which platen is provided in the main body 3, and the movable platen 5 for a booklet form medium, either the platen 4 or the platen 5 being selectively opposed to a printing head by rotating the main body 3. In the platen mechanism, a driving mechanism is provided for moving the movable platen 5 upward in synchronism with a printing operation under the condition where the platen 5 is opposed to the head by rotating the main body 3. Namely, the movable platen 5 can be moved in vertical direction, and when switching the platen mode, the movable platen 5 is located on the lower side (the main body 3 side), and the main body 3 is rotated under this condition to switch the platen mode.
