NEW MATERIAL:The optically active (1S,5R)-7,7-alkylenedioxy-2-alkoxycarbonyl- bicyclo[3,3,0]octan-3-one of formula I [R is lower alkyl; B is (alkyl-substituted) alkylene]. EXAMPLE:(1S,5R)-7,7-ethylenedioxy-2-ethoxycarbonylbicyclo[3,3,0]octan- 3-one. USE:Intermediate for pharmaceuticals such as platelet coagulation inhibitor, vasodilator, etc. PREPARATION:The racemic (1SR,5RS)-7,7-alkylenedioxy-2-alkoxycarbonyl- cisbicyclo[3,3,0]octan-3-one of formula II is treated with a micro-organism capable of specifically reducing the keto group of the (1R,5S)-isomer. The objective compound of formula I is obtained as the non-reduced material.
