POLARIZATION MAINTAINING OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To decrease the loss of an optical fiber by spressing the spread of light to a region held in place between the stress applying parts of a coupler part. CONSTITUTION:A base material for the 1st clad 42 including a core part 41 and a base material for the 2nd clad 43 are polished and both materials are put into a jacket tube 54, then the materials and tube are worked to one body. The core part 41 is constituted of SiO2+GeO2, the basematerialfor the 1st clad 42 of SiO2, the 2nd clad part 43 of SiO2+F and the jacket tube 54 of SiO2. Holes are bored to the 2nd clad part 43 of the base materials worked to one body and stress applying base materials 55 are inserted into the holes. The entire part is then drawn to obtain a fiber. The extremely low-loss optical fiber coupler is thus easily obtd.
