PURPOSE:To realize high density recording and to reduce the size and price of a vertical magnetic recording and reproducing device by providing main magnetic pole holders which have plural main magnetic poles and a mechanism which drives the main magnetic pole holder so that at least one main pole selected among the main magnetic poles contacts a recording medium. CONSTITUTION:The vertical magnetic recording and reproducing device has a multifunctional head, main magnetic pole holders 22 and 22' where magnetic poles 21 and 21' are arranged are rotated or slanted as shown by arrows (a) or (b), and (c) or (d) respectively to select optional main magnetic poles, which are brought into contact with recording media 23 and 23' to perform recording and reproduction. In this case, driving devices for rotating or slanting the main magnetic pole holders 22 and 22' use, for example a small-sized motor, an electromagnetic plunger, and a piezoelectric element, etc., in combination. Consequently, high-speed operation and small size are realized. |
