PURPOSE:To inhibit oxidation of carbon fiber after preheating and to improve filling property of molten metal by using a green compact made by mixing carbon fiber with a metallic powder which is oxidized by priority to the carbon fiber to produce heat. CONSTITUTION:The carbon fiber is mixed with the metallic powder such as Ti, Zr, Fe, etc., which is oxidized by priority to the carbon fiber to produce heat and then the resulting mixture is compacted into a prescribed shape by the use of a binder. The green compact is preheated to >=about 600 deg.C in a preheating furnace with a nonoxidizing atmosphere, which is taken out into the air and heated to allow the metallic powder to be oxidized to produce heat. After that the compact is immediately put into a mold so that the fiber compact is filled, under the condition where the metallic powder is in an oxidative exothermic state, with a molten metal such as Mg alloy etc., followed by solidification. In this way, a carbon fiber-reinforced metallic member having superior tensile strength can be obtained.
