PURPOSE:To provide a recorder capable of recording at high speed even when using a monochromic ink ribbon and consuming less electric power, by performing a color-selecting operation only when a predetermined controlling input is supplied in the case of using a monochromic ink ribbon having a width for a plurality of colors. CONSTITUTION:The recorder is set into an on-line mode by an on-line switch provided in an operating part 11, data received through a receiving part 12 according to control of a host device are recorded by a recording part 13 under the control of a controlling part 10, and it is discriminated whether or not the data received from the host are completely recorded. When the recording is completed, three conditions of whether the recorder is set into an off-line condition (namely, it is disconnected from the control of the host) by the on-line switch, whether a form feed switch at the operating part 11 is turned ON, and whether a recording completion flag is set ON, are checked, and only when all of the three conditions are affirmed, the ink ribbon 2 is moved relative to a recording head 3 in the sequence shown by A-C so that the ribbon 2 is used uniformly over the entire width thereof.
