PURPOSE:To utilize space effectively and make the area for installation small by making an original read by a reading unit U-turn the end of the reading unit and discharge paper on the upper side of the reading unit. CONSTITUTION:Only one sheet of original placed uppermost of plural sheets of original 0 is advanced by rotation of a carrying belt 3 and a paper feeding roller (1) 24 along an original guide 11, light is irradiated on the original by a fluorescent lamp 15, and an image is formed on a photo-electric element 2 by an image forming lens 2, and converted to video signals. The original is then U-turned along a U-turn guide 22 by rotation of a paper feeding roller (2) 26, and discharged on a paper discharge tray 14 by rotation of a paper discharging roller 13. That is, the structure is three-stage from below, i.e. an original to be read, a reading unit, and a discharged original, and actual area for installation can be made small.
