PURPOSE:To prevent bad influences of moisture in the air on a detecting element by making detecting action intermittently, and at the same time, by keeping a gas detecting element warm in the period of cessation of detection by applying current intermittently. CONSTITUTION:A gas detector performs detection of gas for a detecting period DELTAT at every period of gas detection. The detecting period DELTAT is made up of a preheating period DELTATp and a measuring period DELTATd. Time other than the gas detecting period DELTAT is an element warming period Tk, and current is applied intermittently to keep warm the element. Warming temperature of the element by intermittent application of current changes wavily in higher level than ambient temperature. Accordingly, adhesion of moisture to the detecting element can be prevented, and lowering of sensitivity of platinum, palladium etc. on the surface of the detecting element due to deterioration by moisture can be prevented.
