An improved process for the ozonization of alpha , beta -unsaturated cyclohexanones, most notably isophorone and piperatone, to produce 5-ketoalkanoic acids is provided. For the process, the alpha , beta -unsaturated cyclohexanone is ozonized in an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid participating solvent which may optionally contain water and a soluble manganous salt.
