A fuel cell comprising first and second electrodes, a matrix for carrying electrolyte sandwiched between said electrodes and having a peripheral area, and independent integral shim means adjacent said area of said matrix, the shim means comprising silicon carbide in an amount of at least about 50 percent by weight.
