NEW MATERIAL:The polyprenyldiol of formula I (the group of formula II is trans-isoprene unit; the group of formula III is cis-isoprene unit; n is 11-19). USE:Useful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, especially a synthetic raw material of mammal dolichols of formula IV. Dolichol is distributed widely in the body of mammals in the form of a homolog mixture composed mainly of the homologs containing 14, 15 or 16 cis-isoprene units, and is useful for the maintenance of life of a living body. The present diol is useful because it can be converted to dolichol without using expensive 5C chain extender. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting the polyprenyl halide of formula V (X is halogen) with the acetoacetic acid ester of formula VI (R<1> is lower alkyl) in the presence of a basic compound and reducing the resultant polyprenyl ketocarboxylic acid ester of formula VII.
