PURPOSE:To improve operativity and operation efficiency by providing a decision means which decides whether an original having image information on one surface is set with the top surface up or not when the original is set on an original tray and a control means which operates to bring the top surface of the original into contact with platen glass on the basis of the decision result of said means. CONSTITUTION:When the original 3 is set on the original tray 2, a photosensor 52, etc., detect whether image information is on the reverse surface of the original 3 or not. The detection signal 81 of the photosensor 52 is supplied to and averaged by an integration circuit 82 and a comparator 83 compares the averaged signal outputted by the integration circuit 82 with a reference signal 85. A CPU 71 when supplying a digital signal 89 from a latch 90 judges whether the reverse surface of the original 3 is up or not and when so, the original 3 is turned over by passing through the 1st carry-in path 5 and sent to platen glass; when the top surface is down, the original is sent to the platen glass 8 without being turned over. Therefore, the original is sent to the platen glass 8 as specified regardless whether the image information side of the original 3 is up or down. Consequently, the operativity and operation efficiency are improved.
