NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is 2-12C straight chain alkyl or alkoxy; *C is asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:2-Methylbutyl (+)-4-(4'-hexylbenzoyl)resorcylidene-4-aminocinnamate. USE:A ferroelectric liquid crystal substance component, having properties of rapid response of the molecular orientation by influence of an electric field and utilizable as an electrooptical switching element. PREPARATION:A beta-resorcylaldehyde expressed by formula II is reacted with a 4-alkyl- or 4-alkoxybenzoyl chloride expressed by formula III under ordinary esterification conditions to give a compound expressed by formula IV, which is then condensed with (+)-2-methylbutyl 4-aminocinnamate expressed by formula V through dehydration to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
