PURPOSE:To represent gradation sufficiently by recording only picture elements of the same gradation in the first scanning and recording picture elements of a gradation different from that of picture elements, which are recorded in the first scanning, in the second scanning and repeating this processing similarly for all picture elements. CONSTITUTION:The temperature of an ink 11 is set to a value t1, and a picture element 31 is recorded during the scanning from a home position 41 to a counter position 42. Picture elements 33 and 37 are recorded similarly while a recording head is moved from the home position 41 to the counter position 42. Thereafter, the temperature of the ink 11 is set to a value t2, and a recording pulse P2 different from the first recording pulse P1 is applied to record a picture element 36 while the recording head is moved from the counter position 42 to the home position 41; and the temperature of the ink 11 is set to a value t3, and the recording pulse P3 is applied twice to record picture elements 34 and 35 while the recording head is moved from the home position 41 to the counter position 42. Thus, the constitution of a printer which records picture elements having many gradations is simplified.
