PURPOSE:To obtain a finer gradient by providing a control means which controls the laser power of a laser beam and varying the dot diameter of plural dots in one picture element to control variably the gradation. CONSTITUTION:The dot diameter of the laser beam is varied by the control of a laser power controller 209, and the dot density in the subscanning direction of the laser beam is varied by the control of a scanning speed controller 219, and the dot density in the main scanning direction of the laser beam is varied by the control of a picture signal frequency controller 220. When dot densities in main scanning and subscanning direction are varied, longitudinal and transverse magnifications of pictures are changed. The dot diameter of each dot in one picture element is varied by the control of the laser power controller 209. The dot diameter is changed stepwise to obtain a finer gradation, and drawings, patterns, photographic images, etc. are outputted as beautiful natural pictures.
