LAMINATED RUBBER PLUG AND MANUFACTURE THEREOF

A film of a fluoro polymer (e.g. a copolymer of ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene) is subjected to sputter etching at a discharge power of 0.1 to 20 Watt.sec/cm<2>,e.g. 0.1 - 2 watt for 1 - 10 secs, in an inert gas at a pressure of 10<-><3> to 10<-><1> Torr. to render the surface adhesive to rubber; apparatus which can be used, including a high frequency electric source is shown in Figure 1. The treated surface is placed against a sheet of unvulcanised rubber and the sheet and film laminated together with heat and pressure. A piece of the laminate is placed on a mold and forced therein, and heated to shape it to a plug (35) having the polymer (31) laminated to the surfaces of the rubber (34) which will contact the interior of a container; the rubber is also vulcanised by the heat. The plug is useful in closing containers of medicaments since the polymer is inert. The surface treatment gives good adhesion of the polymer and rubber.
