NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is 2-12C straight chain alkyl or alkoxy; C* is asymmetric carbon atom). EXAMPLE:(+)-4-[4'-(2-Methylbutyl)benzoyl]resorcylidene 4-ethylaniline. USE:A liquid crystal substance exhibiting ferrelectricity. PREPARATION:(+)-4-(2-Methylbutyl)benzoyl chloride expressed by formula II is reacted with beta-resorcylaldehyde expressed by formula III under ordinary esterification conditions to give (+)-4-[4'-(2-methylbenzoyl]resorcylaldehyde experssed by formula IV, which is then condensed with a 4-alkyl- (or 4-alkoxy) aniline under ordinary conditions through dehydration to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
