Similarly, a classifying gate 26b is also turned off when a position code which indicates the presence of mail, has disappeared from its operating area in the memory part 25. Thereby, the control of gate means can be easily carried out, abnormality in transporting paper, etc. can be prevented, and power consumption can be reduced.
