PRODUCTION OF MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM

PURPOSE:To obtain the title Co-Cr vertical magnetic recording medium having excellent wear resistance by introducing gaseous oxygen into the part separated from a magnetic recording layer forming part with a mask provided in a vapor flow and forming a Co-Cr oxide layer on the surface of a magnetic recording layer. CONSTITUTION:A long-sized nonmagnetic substrate 2 is wound on a can 3 in a vacuum vessel 1 and rotated. A Co-Cr vapor flow 4 comes out from a vaporization source 5 which is heated by an electron gun 15, the incident angle on the can 3 is determined by masks 8 and 9 and a film is formed on the substrate 2. The vapor flow incident between masks 8 and 7 forms a Co-Cr magnetic layer and the vapor flow incident between the masks 9 and 7 forms a Co-Cr oxide layer pipe 6. The mask 7 can be moved between the mask 8 and the mask 9 and the thickness of the oxide layer can be determined by adjusting the position of the mask 7. Since the interface between the magnetic layer and the protective layer is not evidently discriminated on the Co-Cr oxide film which is formed on the surface of the magnetic layer, the oxide film is not stripped off from the interface.
