NEW MATERIAL:A 2-quinoylfuran derivative expressed by formula I (R is low alkyl or alkenyl). EXAMPLE:2-Quinoyl-4-(4-methyl-3-pentenyl)furan. USE:A medicine, having antimicrobial activity and stably preservable at <=0 deg.C in N2 though decomposed by allowing to stand at room temperature. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a dimethyl sulfonium methylide expressed by formula III in the presence of a tertiary amine to give a 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-4-R-substituted-2,5-dihydrofuran expressed by formula IV (novel when R is other than CH3), which is then oxidized with potassium nitrosodisulfonate (called Fremy's salt) expressed by formula V to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I. The above-mentioned com pound expressed by formula II is obtained by subjecting a compound expressed by the formula C-CO-R and salicylaldehyde to aldol condensation in the presence of a basic catalyst.
