NEW MATERIAL:4-[alpha-Hydroxy-2-methyl-5-(imidazolyl)benzyl]-3, 5-dimethylbenzoic acid expressed by formula I or a salt and/or hydrate thereof. USE:Useful as a preventing and treating agent for thrombosis, cerebral apoplexy, cardial infraction, acute cardiac death, angina pectoris, hypertension, asthma, nepthritis, ischemic cerebral circulation disorder, etc., having pharmacological action, e.g. inhibitory action on biosynthesis of thromboxane A2 and blood platelet agglutination, etc., and further the ability to prevent the metastasis of cancer and useful as a drug. PREPARATION:For example, a novel compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a metal hydride complex compound, e.g. sodium boron hydride, in a solvent to give the compound expressed by formula I. The novel compound expressed by formula II is obtained by oxidizing, e.g. 2,3',6'-trimethyl-5-iodo-4'- isopropylbenzophenone and reacting the resultant compound with imidazole in the presence of a base and catalyst.
