PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a surfactant in high purity and yield, by sulfating a higher alcohol with a specific moisture content or below with a specified amount of SO3, neutralizing the sulfate and spray-drying the resultant neutralized slurry. CONSTITUTION:A higher alcohol with <=0.1wt% moisture content, e.g. 12-14C saturated alcohol, is sulfated with 0.9-0.98mol, based on one mol above- mentioned alcohol, SO3. The resultant sulfate is then neutralized with caustic soda to form a slurry, which is spray-dried to remove water therefrom and afford the aimed substance higher alcohol sulfuric acid ester salt.
